On the eve on a huge celebration for the SF Giants, I came across this video posting from a great organization for youth sport coaches called Positive Coaches Associations (PCA)www.positivecoach.org. This is an organization that changed my views on coaching youth sports after I read their CEO Jim Thompson’s book called “Positive Coaching”. It is a must read if you are coaching youth sports or managing business teams. It changes your perspective about how to bring a team together and how to get your individual player to perform at their best.

I received this video link this morning in my inbox and felt it was very appropriate to share this wisdom from our SF GIANTS World Series championship coach, Bruce Bochy. This is the coach of the team that defied all odds (in every area of the game), broke many of the old traditional models and records and was RESILIENT beyond belief to win the ultimate price in their profession a WORLD SERIES!

This video was from 2011 yet you can observe and listen why this man has led his teams to two different World Series in just three years.

Here is a summary of some of his key points:

1.       BE RESILIENT

a.       How:  1) Be positive 2) Never give up 3)Never give in

2.       DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY

a.       “If your sense of significance is determined by how you perform, your dead in our game”

3.       THERE ARE SO MANY UPS AND DOWNS

a.       Learn from it

b.      Move On

c.       Focus Forward

i.      Focus on next action, not the mistake you just made

4.       CRITICAL TO ALWAYS HAVE THE PLAYER IN THE HERE AND NOW!

a.       Cannot afford to have players not ready to go at their best now

5.       I AM CONVINCED THAT THE TEAMS THAT ARE THERE AT THE END ARE THE TEAMS THAT ARE THE MOST POSITIVE

a.       Being Positive expands their capacity to bounce back and be RESILIENT

6.       WHAT IS GOING TO “DEFINE THE PLAYER”

a.       How he chooses to handle the “MISTAKE” will determine what kind of player he will be

7.       BEST ADVICE FOR ALL COACHES

a.       When you see somebody dwelling on the negative

i.      Help them out of it

ii.      Shake them to get them out of it

8.       HIS GOAL – TO BE THE MOST RESILIENT TEAM IN BASEBALL

Well it looks like he did just that this season. No one can question that the SF Giants are the most RESILIENT team in all of baseball. The Giants achieved this in such a spectacular way, I believe this philosophy is worth implementing in our lives!   Watch the video, reflect on the simple yet championship logic that each of us can implement in our own game.
